Once Ashamed

Abandoned as a child, I was ashamed because I was a castaway.

But I landed in the hands of a loving grandmother who gave me an identity and a passion.

Poor, I was ashamed because I had little in my pocket.

But I learned to value all I had and that I had more valuable things than money.

Broke, I was ashamed because no relative helped me pay for college.

But luckily, my creativity stepped forward to help me find my way there.

Different, I was ashamed because I didn’t fit in any group.

But I learned I am special so that I could appreciate my uniqueness.

Shy, I was ashamed because I was awkward in social situations.

But I later learned that it was a skill I could learn, and I became talkative.

Alone, I was ashamed, because I was alone.

But I discovered that I enjoy my own company.

Deceived, I was ashamed because I didn’t know she would lie to me.

But the fire in my anger made me understand anger, and it soothed my soul.

Controlled, I was ashamed, because I didn’t know I had a controlling husband.

But I realized it and divorced him.

Divorced, I was ashamed because I deemed it a failure in my relationship.

But I later learned it took much courage to finalize it and move forward.

Stupid, I was ashamed, because I took many risks and fell.

But I learned many lessons and strengthened my character.

Failed; I was ashamed, because I never made a million dollars in business.

But I learned many lessons and sharpened many life skills.

Betrayed, I was ashamed because I was blindsided and did not know he would cheat on me.

But luckily, I didn’t marry him, or I would have an unfaithful husband.

Devastated, I was ashamed because I lost myself when we broke up.

But I found myself on an island nation where I could begin anew.

Lost, I was shamed because I lost my way in middle age.

But in the confusion, I found a new passion that comforted my soul.

Damaged, I was ashamed because I got hurt by one man after another.

But I learned more about myself and what I wanted in a relationship.

Frightened, I was ashamed because I created an invisible wall to keep others away.

But I knocked down the wall when I became a writer and podcaster.

Trapped, I was ashamed, because the five-year-old me created a sad story.

But I discovered it was up to me to allow myself to be loved and to love.

Old, I was ashamed because I could do nothing about it.

But I am grateful for all the wisdom I acquired.

I was once ashamed, but I am no longer ashamed.

Key Takeaway: Though I was once ashamed, I am no longer ashamed. A shift in perspectives and growth made all the difference.
