Scammed by a Psychic
Desperate to know if it would take a long time for me to get a divorce and if I would survive it unscathed, I wanted to know in advance. Wondering if I would find a new love where I would live happily ever after, I yearned to know ahead. And so, I ventured to hire a psychic for the very first time. She did tell me a few incredulous things to answer my questions, but I wanted to know more. That was when I unknowingly got scammed.
Sitting on a folding chair with a table in front of me, she was on the other side of the table with large windows behind her. It wasn’t an office. It looked like a place she rented out. I walked upstairs to get there. She looked to be in her thirties and did not dress professionally. She wore a plain white shirt with buttons from top to bottom and black pants. She looked like she could have been anyone off the street. I don’t even remember her name! Still, I proceeded to be there to get what I wanted to know. Maybe I should have left as the environment didn’t look copacetic, but I didn’t. I wanted to know.
The psychic asked me to give her some coins to put in a jar she had. I thought it to be a strange request, but I complied. She said it was to see if there was clarity or darkness in my past. She put my coins into her jar, which she filled with water. My eyes widened in disbelief. She barely shook the jar, and the water turned black. It was so black that I could not see the coins. Was she doing some strange kind of magic?
She opened the jar to pour the muddy water and coins onto an aluminum tray. She proceeded to tell me a most unbelievable and scary story. I can still remember the details of what she said, but I still say to myself, could it be true? If it is true, how could it be true?! I listened in silence.
Her words sounded like they were in the distance; the story was surreal. It couldn’t be real, but a part of me said it could be. It later came to nag at me to continue to say it could be true, but I wish it weren’t.
Her voice spoke. It sounded like this: Long ago, your father had a girlfriend before he met your mother, and she loved him dearly. But suddenly, one day, she heard that your father had married your mother. It was an arranged marriage set up by your grandfather. Your father’s girlfriend was so angry that she went in search of a witch, a real witch. She searched long and hard to find one. She wanted to put a curse on your father. It would be that your father would never know love in his family. If he had any children, they would never secure love. And Emily, this curse hit you the hardest because when the curse finally struck, your mom was pregnant with you. That is your darkness. That was the story I heard. Why did she tell such a horrible story? Was I always doomed when it came to love?
Why did I think it could be possible that her story was true? My parents did have an arranged marriage. My grandfather forced my mother to marry my father. There was never love in my family. My father didn’t love any of his kids except for my older sister, whom he adored. My brothers and sisters didn’t like or care for each other. Even as mature humans now, we never bonded. There was no explanation for why we never connected like a family, good or bad. The relationships did not exist. We were only related by biology. Mom sent every child away at one time or another except for my older sister, who was the eldest. Her actions only made things worse and damaged each child’s self-esteem. The situation never improved; it was that way all my life. Only my eldest sister seemed to have a good or normal relationship with our parents. The curse would not have struck her if it had been struck because she existed before me. So, was the psychic’s story true?
The story she shared or made up had nothing to do with my questions, but that was the first thing she told me after my coins disappeared into the darkness of the clear water that turned black. People usually like to hear good news, and I thought psychics would spiel good news to appeal to customers, but this one did not.
I pressed for answers to my questions about my impending divorce. The psychic said it would be over quickly, and I didn’t need to worry about it; the divorce would happen. She answered matter-of-factly in only a few minutes. That was all she had to say about my divorce.
My other question was life after my divorce. She said I would have more suitors but did not clarify whether they would be happily ever after. I insisted on knowing, and this was where I made the mistake.
This unprofessionally dressed lady asked me to deposit $1200 into an account. I told her it was a lot of money. She said I had money and that I could indeed afford it. Since she was a supposed psychic, I wondered if I could even hide from her how much I had in my bank account! I hesitated. She said, “Come on, don’t you want to know?” The first reading only cost twenty dollars, and she had already given me an earful. Now she was pushing me for twelve hundred dollars!
Desperate to know my future, I deposited the money. The psychic told me I would be with someone. When asked if I would marry him, she reluctantly said two years later. Her words did not seem real this time because she didn’t want to answer me and I paid her twelve hundred dollars!
I suspect her fantastical story about a witch who cursed my family could still be true. Her answer to my impending divorce was accurate. It did happen, and it did not take long to complete. I did have another man in my life after my divorce, but I never married him. So, I was right. Her reluctance to give me an answer and then saying it would happen in two years did not occur.
I believe she did have some psychic powers, but she abused her powers to scam twelve hundred dollars out of me. It happened because I was desperate to know about my future. The key word is desperate. She knew it and preyed on my vulnerability. When you are desperate, sometimes you do stupid things. My need to know made me give away twelve hundred dollars, and I got a lie out of it.
What did I learn? I have a need to know. I have a need to know many things. Sometimes, it is a good thing, but in this case, it is a bad thing. Sometimes, I need to let nature take its course. Let whatever will happen happen. Other times, I need to believe that I will have better days. I must believe because if I don’t, then there is no hope. And without hope, there is no impetus to push forward. Life is too precious not to value it, appreciate its beauty, and enjoy its splendor!
Key Takeaway: Though I was scammed by a psychic, I learned I did something stupid in my desperation, and I need to allow nature to take its course.
